સુદામા ચરિત: કડવું ૧

Premanand's Sudama Charit is not a short lyric but an akhyan, a performable narrative poem in which story, invocation, pacing, and devotional memory move together. The opening kadvu shows the machinery of the form. The poet begins with Ganapati, Saraswati, and the wish for clear speech, then hands the story to the familiar Puranic chain of narration: Shuka speaking to King Parikshit.

The first movement is striking because it starts before the famous poverty and reunion. Sudama is introduced as a fellow student of Krishna and Balarama at Sandipani's ashram. They study together, bring alms together, eat together, and sleep on the same bedding. The line સુદામો, શામળ, સંકર્ષણ અન્નભિક્ષા કરી લાવે compresses theology into schoolboy intimacy: the Lord and his poor friend share the ordinary discipline of student life.

By the end of the kadvu, the later story has begun to gather: Krishna leaves for Dwarka, Sudama enters household life with a renunciant mind, and poverty surrounds the family. Premanand's gift is tonal balance. The poem can hold divine grandeur, domestic hardship, and friendship in the same breath, preparing the emotional ground for the reunion that makes Sudama Charit one of Gujarati's enduring narrative treasures.
