જ્યાં જ્યાં વસે એક ગુજરાતી, ત્યાં ત્યાં સદાકાળ ગુજરાત !
જ્યાં જ્યાં ગુજરાતી બોલાતી, ત્યાં ત્યાં ગુર્જરીની મહોલાત.
ઉત્તર દક્ષિણ પૂર્વ કે પશ્ચિમ,
જ્યાં ગુર્જરના વાસ;
સૂર્ય તણાં કિરણો દોડે ત્યાં
સૂર્યતણો જ પ્રકાશ:
જેની ઉષા હસે હેલાતી, તેનાં તેજ પ્રફુલ્લ પ્રભાત !
જ્યાં જ્યાં વસે એક ગુજરાતી, ત્યાં ત્યાં સદાકાળ ગુજરાત !
ગુર્જર વાણી, ગુર્જર લહાણી,
ગુર્જર શાણી રીત:
જંગલમાં પણ મંગલ કરતી
ગુર્જર ઉદ્યમપ્રીત :
જેને ઉર ગુજરાત હુલાતી તેને સુરવન તુલ્ય મિરાત :
જ્યાં જ્યાં વસે એક ગુજરાતી, ત્યાં ત્યાં સદાકાળ ગુજરાત !
કૃષ્ણ, દયાનંદ, દાદા કેરી
પુણ્યવિરલ રસભોમ;
ખંડ ખંડ જઈ ઝૂઝે ગર્વે-
કોણ જાત ને કોમ !
ગુર્જર ભરતી ઉછળે છાતી, ત્યાં રહે ગરજી ગુર્જર માત;
જ્યાં જ્યાં વસે એક ગુજરાતી, ત્યાં ત્યાં સદાકાળ ગુજરાત!
અણકીધાં કરવાનાં કોડે,
અધૂરાં પૂરાં થાય;
સ્નેહ શૌર્ય ને સત્ય તણા ઉર
વૈભવ રાસ રચાય:
જય જય જન્મ સફળ ગુજરાતી ! જય જય ધન્ય અદલ ગુજરાત !

Ardeshar Khabardar's poem is usually remembered by its opening line, જ્યાં જ્યાં વસે એક ગુજરાતી, though he published it in Rashtrika under the title “સદાકાળ ગુજરાત.” He wrote it to be sung at the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad gathering of 1926, and that occasion matters: the poem is not private nostalgia, but public cultural self-definition.
Its central move is simple and powerful. Gujarat is not merely a bounded region; it is carried by ગુર્જર વાણી, ગુર્જર લહાણી, and ગુર્જર શાણી રીત -- speech, generosity, and a way of being. The repeated line જ્યાં જ્યાં વસે એક ગુજરાતી, ત્યાં ત્યાં સદાકાળ ગુજરાત makes the homeland portable without making it thin. Wherever Gujarati people work, speak, remember, and build, the poem says, Gujarat remains present.
The poem's list of directions -- north, south, east, west -- gives it an early diasporic charge. Khabardar's Gujarat is expansive, confident, and civic: it invokes Krishna, Dayanand, and Dadabhai Naoroji, then turns toward work, courage, truth, and affection. That is why the poem still works as an anthem. It names belonging without shrinking it.
અરદેશર ફરામજી ખબરદાર
Ardeshar Faramji Khabardar was a major Parsi Gujarati poet whose verse helped carry Gujarati literary identity into civic and public life. Born in Daman, he wrote in Gujarati with a strong feeling for homeland, language, and collective belonging. His collection *Rashtrika* gathered patriotic and cultural songs, including the widely loved “Sadaakal Gujarat.” Khabardar's work is especially important for showing Gujarati identity as linguistic and civilizational rather than narrowly regional: wherever Gujarati speech and memory travel, Gujarat travels too.
